The Future of New Zealand: Some Predictions

I'd like to share some predictions about life in New Zealand.

I believe it will be difficult to solve the crisis in housing unaffordability by 2030. Housing has been becoming increasingly unaffordable over the past three years and the Covid 19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem as New Zealanders abroad have rushed to return home. I think the key to solving the problem is the opening up of new areas of land on the city fringes for housing estates and the opening up of inner city land for high density housing towers.

I don't believe New Zealand will achieve its goal to be preadator free by 2050, but I do believe it will have partially achived this goal in that more regions of the country will be predator free, especially offshore islands such as Stewart Island and Waiheke Island. I think for the goal to be reached, steps will have to be taken to prevent domestic cats hunting and killing birds. Registration could be required for cats and they could be required to wear bells or some other device which alerts birds to their presence.

I believe electric cars will be significantly more common in New Zealand by 2035. As more of them are made, they will be able to travel further on a single charge and they will come down in price. As a result, more consumers will buy them and the air in New Zealand cities will be cleaner and the streets quieter.

  1. Second one is really interesting. About the animal problem, the abandonment of raising is problem during the pandemic of COVID 19 in Japan. It causes animals go wild and ecosystem destroy.

    1. Interesting! Are you saying that people have been neglecting or even abandoning their pets during the pandemic? You're not also referring to livestock as well, are you?

  2. I think it is a good thing to conduct a policy in the land in order to save birds, and animals where human opened it up to create new areas for people. People can not force animals to go away. So we have to help each other to live peacefully. And about the third prediction, I also think more Japanese people will own electric cars to save the planet in the future, but now those cars are really expensive.

    1. In NZ, over the years, yes many forests have been burnt down or cut down to establish farms and townships, and then the predators we introduced such as stoats, weasels & ferrets are killing the birds that live in the remaining forested areas. Our beautiful native birds have thus faced a double whammy -- habitat loss & predation. We are trying to turn this situation around by tree planting and predator eradication programs.

  3. I enjoyed reading your predictions. And I believe the third prediction will apply to Japan, too. Due to the COVID-19, many people are likely to choose driving cars rather than taking transportation. So I think it is important for environment to increase electric cars in this world in the future.

    1. Interesting that you predict that people will be more likely to drive somewhere than use public transportation because of the pandemic. This will definitely have a negative impact on air quality & global warming. I don't know how quickly making the switch to electric vehicles could compensate for the above development?
